I tested it on Intrepid alpha 5 (x86), and my playback experience is
almost identical to the one Hardy provides.
I have just 1 more playback complaint (goes for both Hardy x86 and
Intrepid alpha 5 x86 editions only), which is, that when I boot and I
had external speakers plugged into the 3.5 mm sp
The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:
1) If you are comfortable
For me, sound is fixed, in the Hardy beta and the RC (haven't tested it on the
alpha's) it works out of the box.
In Gutsy I noticed you can get sound (albeit with some issues) by using
Linux-backport-modules.

@Jean-Paul : Yes, I mean "model=zepto".
Alsa 1.0.16-rc2 has been uploaded into Hardy today, it seems :
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/+source/alsa-driver/1.0.16~rc2-0ubuntu1
So I seems that alsa 1.0.16 wiil make it into Hardy !

Yeah I saw that a new ALSA version (1.0.16) is in the rc stadium, I also saw
that a lot of work was done on the hda_intel codec and drivers, but this is
news to me. Music to my ears!
Can anybody answer my question if 1.0.16 will make it into Hardy?
@Fred: Btw. don't you mean "options snd-hda-in
Just for the record, the next version of alsa will have a special settings for
Zepto laptops (with a REALTEK ALC268 Codec).
So you will be able to put "options snd-hda-intel model=acer" in
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.

I changed the line "options snd-hda-intel model=acer" to "options snd-hda-intel
model=toshiba" after reading somewhere (I think it was the Ubuntu wiki) that
that model's muting feature (internal speakers muting when plugging in a
headset on a laptop) was working.
And indeed it does. Now I have a
Btw. this was on x86, I haven't the chance atm to test it on x86_64.
I also noticed that when I use the "raise volume button" on my znote that the
internal speakers unmute again. They mute again only after plugging my headset
out and in again.

did u guys make sure that the mute is not on a nd in sound prefs pcm is
NOT muted as well as the main sound, if so umute them and esp PCM needs
to be unmuted and raise the volume level to the level u want to use.
I had this happen at times to me on Gutsy - a bug i guess :)

{Gutsy beta] No so
I have tried these steps, and they work!
Maybe it's possible to change the configuration files in such a way that
when installing linux-backports-modules (or the Hardy equivalent), the
user has no extra config work?

Jean-Paul, try this :
Run live CD
Switch to a terminal (CTRL+ALT+F1) and run the following commands :
fuser /dev/snd/*
This command should something like that :
/dev/snd/controlC0:
Then type :
kill
cat /proc/modules|cut -f1 -d" "|grep snd|xargs sudo rmmod
lsmod|grep snd
This command sho
if anybody knows of a way to avoid having to reboot after editing
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base in order to get sound, then I will try using
the x86_64 live disc, installing linux-backports-modules, edit
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and see if sound works.

{Gutsy beta] No sound whatsoever on znote 66
I would if it weren't for the fact that in the mean time, I've gone back to x86.
I wouldn't at all be surprised if these steps you menstion are indeed what I'd
have to do after installing linux-backports-modules on x86_64 since these same
steps are applicable to x86.
I found that out after going
Jean-Paul :
After installing linux-backports-modules, could you try to edit this file :
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
and modify the following line :
options snd-hda-intel
so that it looks like :
options snd-hda-intel model=acer
the reboot and test if sound works.
If it doesn't work, repeat
I just did a fresh Ubuntu x86_64 install on my pc, and installed linux-
backports-modules, but I still don't get any sound.

I'm not surprised, so try this:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=577699&highlight=snd_hda_intel%3A+disagrees+about+version+of+symbol+snd_ctl_add
Try the post from pcmanlin (AFTER compiling alsa 1.0.15 from source), I also
had to take those steps on Kubuntu Gutsy final (weird, I know, but
well Jean-Paul tried your path but no sound here (:

I have sound now.
I have tried to compile the 1.0.15rc3(driver and lib) and 1.0.15rc1(util)
ALSA packages again, but this time I've first copied the .tar.bz2 files to
/usr/src/alsa (I had to mkdir it first, of course).
Then I used the cli to unpack them for a change (I've always tried to use th
Maybe it's relevant, maybe it's not, but I've tried Feisty too (the alternate
disc only, the live disc won't boot on my laptop and crashes to busybox,
luckily this has been fixed in Gutsy.) and there I don't get any sound either.
I've also been trying Gutsy since Tribe 4 and it's the same story t
