That's a lot of "ifs" :) The actual problem is that restricted drivers manager
should download nvidia-glx-new, and not nvidia-glx as it did.
I think I'll go down with the Bug #106217 issue since that seems like the
background reason for everything.

Hmm. It looks like that .nvidia_new_installed was modified on the 28th.

OK here's what I think part of the issue is:
1. nvidia-glx-new was installed by hand creating a hidden dotfile.
2. Thanks to certain modaliases restricted-manager defaulted to installing
nvidia-glx on your hardware.

Before the kernel upgrade? I believe I did have nvidia-glx before and
manually installed nvidia-glx-new, but I'm not 100% sure, because I've
changed motherboard/processor and graphics card in the meantime. I had
agp nvidia Geforce 6600GT two weeks ago and switched to pci express
NX7300GT.

upgrade)? If so this is a case of Bug #106217 ...
By the way the module version only has to change in the kernel ABI it is
using changes.
