That's a lot of "ifs" :) The actual problem is that restricted drivers manager should download nvidia-glx-new, and not nvidia-glx as it did. I think I'll go down with the Bug #106217 issue since that seems like the background reason for everything. I can give you full logs if you'd like that, I have logs since august 23rd in syslog and several other logs packed in .gz.
