Confirmed on feisty with file-roller 2.18.1-0ubuntu1.
According to an strace, file-roller opens the files
/usr/share/mime/{globs,magic,aliases,subclasses,mime.cache}, so
presumably it checks the mime type, but still refuses to open the 'mis-
named' archive, even though file(1) recognizes it as "gz
