I recompiled ALSA and now when i plug the headphones, the speakers mute.
I still have no LFE and i was left with a PCM that does absolutely
nothing.

I have exactly the same problem: no audio and the mute light stays on.
Contrary to what is mentioned in issue 134206, it doesn't seem to be
related to the snd_hda_intel module not being available. The file is
where you would expect it to be (
/lib/modules/2.6.22-10-generic/ubuntu/media/snd-
for me 3 !

Similar problem on HP nx7300. No sound from speakers, headphones are ok.
Red light on the mute button is on.
The number of mixer controls is reduced to four:

Since I upgraded to 2.6.22-10 I can't get my speakers to mute when I plug my
headphones in.
I tried using alsamixer and either both work or both are mute, there's no way
to control them independently. My sound card is a STAC92xx.
