i'm seeing the same bug on a via apollo CLE266 based thin client as well
as on a SIS 550 based one now. setting the gconf key
/desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager forcefully to metacity works
around it for me.

Same here, but with Ubuntu Tribe 2 (not Edubuntu) and VMware Player 2.0.0.
X dies while Gnome is loading, leaving the following message in my
.xsession-errors:
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: x-session-manager: Fatal IO error
104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server :0.0.
X also dies when,
mvo: heh, no go. If I start up failsafe terminal and then
run glxinfo it kills X immediately

Tried 20070627.2 Edubuntu Desktop CD i386 in VMware Fusion on my intel
mac this morning and it still does the same thing. I wonder if it is
just a VMware problem.

OK, well I gotta retract my last comment. For some reason my rsync
didn't work and when I checked the md5sum it was from 20060626.1 . I
checked my bash history and I did rsync 20070627, weird. I checked the
md5sum for the .iso I used for the initial report and that *was* right.
