Originally I ended up editing the xorg.conf to force the resolution to 1280
x 800, and it was ok.
Had no troubles with upgrading to newer releases till 8.10. Now the video
defaults to a very 'speckly' look. Adding sisfb to /etc/modules has

I just installed Intrepid on a SIS 661fx system I can't get it to run at any
resolution above 800x600
Both the Screen Resolution application Xrandr won't find the native monitor
mode ( 1024x768 @ 60 ) and, despite being able to add such mode through Xrandr,

The chip is a Neomagic but the principle may still apply to other
situations. The maximum color depth is detected first and then the
maximum resolution is determined. If the default depth is decreased in
/etc/x11/xorg.conf, then higher screen resolutions may become available

I have a Dell Latitude Cpi D300XT that was stuck in 800x600 mode when
running XUbuntu 7.10. Analysis of the log showed that the video section
was reporting a default graphic depth of 24 bits, making the card run
out of memory at resolutions above 800x600. The fix is very simple:

- Dell Latitude Cpi D300XT. Real estate stuck in 800x600 land. Shrunk
all font sizes to minimum allowed. Attempted to shrink all GUI elements
to minimum. Only pleasing visual is in Opera or Firefox browser, shrink
