Your choices for accessing more then 4GB in Hardy are to install the
server flavour (display and wireless should continue to work correctly),
or install one of the 64 bit kernels. Remember to install using the meta
packages so that you are notified of the next ABI update:
sudo apt-get install linu

I heard read some discussion elsewhere on the internet about being able
to resolve this problem by installing the server kernel. However, it
was mentioned that this could cause problems with video drives (I
haven't tried it myself).

Replying to myself. Maybe if you gave the package the exact same name
you could replace the official kernel package and still use the
restricted drivers (if only that one option HIGHMEM_64G was changed).

Recompiling the kernel isn't too hard it just takes time. I've done it
a bunch of times for my MythTV system due to some special patches needed
for my video capture card's remote. Although you then also need to
compile the needed drivers. The biggest problem I have is that Ubuntu
doesn't

This is still an open issue on 7.10.
Don't know if it will be ever corrected, maybee it's a distrib choice
...
Anyway as a workaround we could recompile the kernel with the 64GO
option.
We have to do it each time there is a kernel update in ubutun, so we should
script this.
