I see the same problem on Kubuntu 8.04.

I heard read some discussion elsewhere on the internet about being able
to resolve this problem by installing the server kernel.  However, it
was mentioned that this could cause problems with video drives (I
haven't tried it myself).

In any case, I don't know why we wouldn't want PAE included in the
desktop kernel since more and more desktop computers are encroaching on
4+ GB of RAM.  Recompiling the kernel isn't a convenient option since
kernel bug fixes come out ever month or making the previously recompiled
kernel obsolete.
