Remove the applet
Add workrave to startup session. In Preferences-> Sessions.
Now when logging in it should come up and be correct (it even looks like an
applet).
You can also create a shortcut to let you restart it if you stop it at some
point.

The Debian bug number is wrong, here is the correct one:

I've experienced the same, on a clean feisty-amd64 install. Also, when I
right-click the applet and Open, then right-click the applet and select
'Remove from Panel', the applet disappears, and then reappears, now
working!

Yes, I experienced the same. When you open workrave in a window, you can
see that it's still counting - only the panel applet isn't updated. It
can be fixed for the current session by quitting and opening again. The
panel applet then works - at least until the next break. But after a
