Daniel, no I do not think so - because otherwise changing the framebuffer
object settings would not be noticable, which it clearly is.
The benchmark plugin is not responsible for my observations, but only seems to
confirm them.
Once the framebuffer objects are disabled the difference in speed wit
mc-return,
I just compiled the latest lp:compiz and lp:unity and cannot find any
performance difference with unityshell loaded (except for the benchmark
plugin bug 1039406). Should this be a duplicate of bug 1039406?

Daniel, seems I found a workaround for this bug.
WORKAROUND:
Disabling the "Framebuffer object" option in CCSM->OpenGL brings Compiz/Unity
to almost the same speed like Compiz standalone.
It seems that unityshell does not like this option.

Daniel, the performance drop with activated Unity is quite large, so my
eyes can catch the change in performance easily.
Animations, moving wobbly windows - all is much smoother without Unity.
But it is also possible to measure the performance drop with the Compiz

It could be but this issue have existed since day 1 of compiz unity, I
would say. I have a feeling unity plugin have gotten slower and slower
from 11.04 - today on my netbook.
