Daniel, no I do not think so - because otherwise changing the framebuffer 
object settings would not be noticable, which it clearly is.
The benchmark plugin is not responsible for my observations, but only seems to 
confirm them.
Once the framebuffer objects are disabled the difference in speed with/without 
unityshell is not obvious anymore and this seems to fix this bug here 
completely, but breaks updating of the Dash and Shortcuts blur then (bug 
1039999)...
