The problem I have is not that the thumbnail generation is slow, but
that gthumb is unresponsive while this happens. A typical directory I
work with in gthumb will have 100s of pictures/RAW files. Generating
thumbnails for all takes 10's of minutes, during which time i can't
really use gthumb.

gthumb can use libopenraw or dcraw to thumbnail NEF images.
dcraw is horribly, horribly slow (but stable). I assume you have dcraw
installed.
libopenraw is new and possibly unstable, but it is very fast. You might
try installing libopenraw and see if it makes life better for you.
