I saw this bug yesterday on an updated quantal system running on a Acer
1810tz laptop. I opened the gnome-control-center and selected the sound

to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.5kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the
linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If i remember it correctly it worked out of the box in Oneiric.
In Precise it did not work at release day, but it got fixed later at some point
after a lot of people had problems with HDMI not showing up in sound settings.
So in Precise it works fine on "3.2.0-26-generic #41-Ubuntu".

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a
kernel version where you were not having this particular problem? This
will help determine if the problem you are seeing is the result of the
introduction of a regression, and when this regression was introduced.
