I have the same exact problem on Samsung Q1U using netbook remix, 9.10.
i915.modeset=0 on the kernel cmdline works with live USB.

I have upgraded to Hardy Heron (04/28/08) . I have the same problem on

upgrade "apt-get dist-upgrade" is no longer supported for some
functions, a note should be added to "apt" packages or elsewhere. I
