Thanks for follow up. Issue still remains.
Tested with Jaunty 9.04 Beta LiveCD. Suspended using menu. Restored with
front panel power button.
Screens are black. Now, when keyboard key is held down, or mouse is
moved, the cursor flickers. However, it no longer stops responding.

Well, I had customized some options, but "Back" doesn't seem to reset

It isn't caused by templates and it isn't just Write. It also happens in
Spreadsheet and Presentation. It's a bug in the "Templates and Documents
- New Document" dialog.
Choose File /New / Templates and Documents.
In the left panel, click "New Document" or "My Documents" or "Templates"

On Intrepid I also experience Nautilus "not responding", with one CPU
(2.4GHz Quad) at 100% for several minutes.
I suspect it is enumerating and caching every item in every subfolder,
because the time varies. E.g. /usr takes a looong time, while Documents
doesn't.
