It isn't caused by templates and it isn't just Write. It also happens in Spreadsheet and Presentation. It's a bug in the "Templates and Documents - New Document" dialog.
Choose File /New / Templates and Documents. In the left panel, click "New Document" or "My Documents" or "Templates" In the center panel, click *any* item.
