Hi again
Finally I found that the pcc_acpi_cd module was to blame for starting
the CD. These are drivers to make Panasonic laptops usable. I'll report
the bug there.
Thanks for the help and sorry for the noise.

Thanks Leann
The issue still exists with the 2.6.24-12 kernel (and up from 2.6.24-8 at
least).
Version 2.6.20-15 does not switch on the CDROM drive. I'll attach a dmesg for
that kernel as well.
Thanks, Martin

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-10-386
Late in the boot sequence the 2.6.24 series kernels (2.6.24-8, 2.6.24-10) start
the CDrom drive on my Panasonic CF-W4 laptop. The CDrom is switched off in the
BIOS settings, and can usually be activated by shifting a slider.

Everything is back to normal after deleting the following file (found that tip
on a newsgroup)
sudo rm /etc/X11/Xsession.d/00xserver-xgl_start-server
So it seems that xgl, or at least the upgrade of it is to blame.

Now it works after using the k3b setup dialog. I just confirmed the
standard settings there, hit burn and it burns.
It looks like k3b is not configured correctly upon installation. Maybe
this is due to the fact that the CD drive was powered off, which means
that /dev/cdrom was nonexistant.

I can confirm this bug on a Panasonic W4. Debug says file
/usr/bin/cdrecord cannot be found.
Removing k3b, cdrecord and wodim (--purge) and re-installing k3b does
not work. The problem seems to be a missing SCSI driver. What's wrong?
