I have this bug with Ubuntu 10.04 exactly as described by the OP (during
heavy transfers). Killing the SSHFS process, unmounting and remounting
solves the problem but seems to crash parts of gnome (not sure which but
my theme disappears). I'm happy to help diagnose if I can and I'll try

Karmic. The sound preferences accessible through the taskbar applet
make no difference. On checking alsamixer, all of the inputs and

some still have the "loading tags" against them. Killing soundconverter

Experiencing the same as revgazza above with Intrepid 8.10. Note I'm
still using version 173 of the Nvidia driver due to a problem with
screen resolution on xscreen 1 with the new driver. A summary of the
behaviour I'm experiencing:
Application launched from top panel in xscreen 1 opens in xscre

Installed the 8.10 release candidate today and met this problem (at
least I think it's this problem). On my second x screen I can move my
mouse pointer over the full screen dimensions, but the portion usable by
gnome is much smaller (see attached screenshot). This wasn't a problem
in 8.04 and is
Just a thought. Unlike most of my icons at the top right of the screen,
the volume control appears on the second x screen whereas the rest
don't. Could the two instances of the volume control be battling over
handing the key event somehow or are keys only directed to the in-focus
screen?

I have Ubuntu 8.04.1 (fully updated) running on an Asus A8SC laptop
(using Nvidia restricted drivers). When I use the laptop's shortcut to
change volume (Fn and F11/F12), both x-screens lock up and appear to

Ubuntu users inadvertently opening up partitions they thought were
protected, should the newer ntfs-3g driver be incorporated into Ubuntu's
The problem isn't that not-even-one can write, but that any user can
read/write when it's supposed to be accessible by just 1 user (the
owner).
Using the 'no_def_opts' option, which removes 'allow_other', does
prevent all users (except the mounting user) having access, but this
isn't the ideal sol
Given the disparity here between permissions and access, I thought I had
better mark this as a security vulnerability. Please change this if
that's inappropriate. Thanks.

Yes. When logged in as 'guest', I can cd into '/media/FILES', ls, read
and write. That's what's causing me concern. 'ls -l' inside
/media/FILES gives me a full list of the contents, which also have the
same permissions (drwx--). Does that clarify the issue?

Think this might be the same bug. When I use 2 X screens through using
2 monitors on the proprietary nvidia driver the volume control
reproducibly crashes every time I use the laptop hotkeys to adjust the
volume. I'm not sure if it's because there are two instances and they
fight over the hotkey
