Tested for 2 hours with Karmic Live-CD yesterday and the problem didn't reoccur. I'd like to upgrade to Karmic and test again to see if it's a configuration problem but I'm wary of bug #399534 which could damage my hardware. I didn't notice that fan problem with the Live CD but will investigate it a little more before committing to upgrading. Hopefully I'll have some further feedback on both bugs soon.
