@ Clint Byrum: I am using a separate /home partition; so I have one
partition with the system and one for home. Haven't had this issue in
previous versions of Ubuntu.

Scratch that... By some cruel coincidence my wireless adapter seems to
have died during the install. I'll leave the status as "Confirmed" for
Patrick's sake though - perhaps he can provide more info?

Binary package hint: ia32-libs
I needed the 32 bit libs from libgstreamer0.10-0 and
libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-0 in order to get streaming auido and video from
the 32 bin secondlife client on Ubuntu Hardy on x86_64. I think these should
likely be in a separate package.

Hi, glad to see you found a solution.
In the end i abandoned the live install CD and downloaded the alternate
install disk which worked a charm. Think i may have needed to install
lilo first then grub later on (for one reason or another i ended up
doing that).
