Hi, glad to see you found a solution. In the end i abandoned the live install CD and downloaded the alternate install disk which worked a charm. Think i may have needed to install lilo first then grub later on (for one reason or another i ended up doing that).
Strangely grub-install locks up pretty much every time i run it but it eventually it went right and i now have a nice grub boot loader with splash screen, xfs root and all... :) Does making /boot an ext2 partition (with / as xfs) let you install with the live cd? If it does i guess thats a pretty good work around...
