I've installed plymouth 0.9.3-1ubuntu10.1 from the cosmic-proposed
repository and I now have the Xubuntu boot splash screen back and no
longer experience a crash after logging in.
Thanks to everyone involved in fixing this.

Just to add to the authentication issue:
On Ubuntu 12.04 I am experiencing this problem now.
I have a Kodak Hero 5.1 with the driver in synaptic as well as
Launchpad.
Was working fine but since various updates I can no longer connect via wireless
on this home printer.
I can connect easily via US
UPDATE: The mods suggested above sadly did not help with Natty. I've
done a total, clean install of 10.04 LTS UbuntuStudio (as I wanted the
low-latency kernel for music apps).
With UbuntuStudio 10.04:
* Video so far works now without a hitch, straight out of the box with my ATI
RV370 [Radeon X300

I am a completely new Linux user. I moved from a totally broken Win XP
environment to Ubuntu 11.04 a couple of weeks ago, expecting a
streamlined, fast and functional system, with Unity 3D as a fancy GUI.

I found that 'Desktop Couch Authentication' is listed twice.
Is this as it should be and/or could this cause the need to log-in

I am having the same problem on a Dell inspiron 1521. My Sansa Clip was
working fine in 9.04 with the 2.6.28-14 kernel but when I updated to the
-15 kernel the problem started. It has not improved with 9.10 and the
new kernel. It works on another computer I have that is also running
