Hi again,
Having just tried, I can confirm that I can boot my T30 into Karmic,
running the 2.6.31-14-generic kernel, from a live CD - it doesn't manage
to correctly detect the on-board wireless card capabilities (WPA/WPA2),
but it does boot to run level 3.

Booting Jaunty hangs on IBM T30

Hi ,
I can confirm that the problem still manifested itself following a
recent (about 3 weeks ago, AFAIR) upgrade attempt on the laptop ... I
had to resort to booting karmic into 2.6.28.11 (which probably caused
the bug I reported at the time) in order to re-install jaunty.

Public bug reported:
On an IBM T30, any and all attempts to boot kernels since 2.6.28-11 all
hang early in the boot process. Removing the splash and quiet commands
prior to boot reveals the following error reported to screen every
minute or so:

Binary package hint: vim
The installed gvim application was running fine under Jaunty (on an IBM
T30). Now, having upgraded to Karmic (but booted into 2.6.28-14 - owing
to consistent failure to boot to 2.6.31-14 documented elsewhere), the
application opens showing an initial
Agh!! How I wish I could type accurately - I actually removed the
quiet clause from the newest i.e. 2.6.31.14 kernel stanza ... not from
2.6.28-14 as I just claimed.

I saw a similar problem, to the OP, on an IBM T30 following upgrade from
Jaunty to Karmic - I'd been having problems booting under Jaunty since
2.6.28-15, I had been and still am, using 2.6.28-14 as a working kernel.
That [booting problems] being said, removing the 'quiet' clause from the

Restarting the window manager, after editing the file as you suggested,
caused the (I presume) window manager to display all sorts of weird
patterns - ultimately rendering a completely unintelligible screen.
Rebooting the PC resulted in the window manager producing the same
display from the outset
Note that the auto-detected screen resolution, altho' seemingly correct,
leaves a huge black border round the useable screen area - approx, 2/3
of the display is border.

In retrospect i.e. following the update, user login has more to do with
the problem - not the gdm restart as I originally thought ... since,
once set, the login screen retains the expected resolution. In either
