Hello,
in Ubuntu 10.10 (and derivatives) I can't have xfce4-notifyd and a KDE
application both installed.
In my case, I want to have k3b, krusader and xfce4-notifyd installed,
but when I try to install the former, apt wants to remove xfce4-notifyd.

Sorry, I've just realised, that this bubbles comes from notification-
daemon package, not notify-osd, though I have both installed, what
confused me (shouldn't they be in conflict?). Also I found out, that
notify-osd can't be configured to spawn pop-ups from bottom right now,
so I guess I will wait
I would like to add another suggestion about notify bubbles' position.
They cover xfce4-panel as they spawn, what forces me to close them to
get to programs, that resident in the system tray. Maybe notify-osd
could read the panel's height and adjust the position to avoid such
situations?

I was lucky to find a solution to this problem, when reading about other
problem. When you edit /etc/init.d/alsa-utils, and comment the 378th
line:
# mute_and_zero_levels "$TARGET_CARD" || EXITSTATUS=1
the sound seems to work properly after restart from Ubuntu to Windows.

I experience the same problem: music player (rhythmbox/exaile) stops
producing sound randomly (or at heavy cpu load, like aptitude post
installation process), although it plays it normally (the progress
slider is moving etc.). By that time pulseaudio process jumps to 100%
cpu. Daemonizing pulseaudi
I faced this problem, when I installed xubuntu-desktop over my gnome-
ubuntu. Curious thing is, that in default gnome sound worked perfectly
fine, i. e. it wasn't muted on startup.
Fortunately, the commenting-379-line workaround worked for me.
