Since Mint is based on Ubuntu I'd consider their version of the package
upstream from Mint's. The bug lies in the packaging, not gtk itself, so
there's nowhere further upstream from them..

I second this request. In contrast to your objection/warning, static
builds of current versions of gdk-pixbuf (and gtk3) work very well in my
experience. But they do not make much sense unless the loaders are also
linked statically. AFAIK, this requires one to configure gdk-pixbuf with
./configure
I updated the title: That the .la files are missing might be intentional
(AFAIK, Debian tries to get rid of libtool files). But the static
library itself is also missing from the -dev archive.

- /var/* (I use tmpfs for /var/lock, /var/run and /var/tmp)
- /home (Which is especially bad, since my /home is encrypted and thus security
is compromised)

Same problem here with NVidia prop. drivers. Worked fine in Maverick,
laggs terribly in Natty. Disabling vblank synchronization does not
resolve the problem.
(Strictly speaking, what lags is mouse movement. i.E. when I zoom in on
a video and don't move the mouse, everything is fine.)

I just noticed: When I trigger the bug using a keyboard-hotkey (as
described above) while having the pointer above a xev window, xev
registers a Button-1-Down (and down only!) Event. I'll attach xev's
output starting from the moment I pressed Volume-Up on my keyboard.

Also, I noticed that "xdotool click 1" (xdotool is a X11 macro
