Happened to me also with 10.10 amd64, can remove package kdm but cannot purge.
Seems that postrm script is trying to double-delete file /etc/init/kdm.conf:
(dpkg -P kdm output:)
...
rm: cannot remove `/etc/init/kdm.conf': No such file or directory
...
Even if I "sudo touch /etc/init/kdm.conf" it
After two and half years I found my Matrox and run into same problem with
Karmic. Blank screen after starting X. Fortunately, there is some hope. See

dvbsnoop -softcrc calculates CRC wrong on 64bit linux (and propably
others). This is because u_long is used in src/misc/crc32.[ch] and
assumed it to be 32bit. Solution might be use of uint32_t from stdint.h.
