The last kernel version that did work is 3.19.0-23-generic #24~14.04.1,
which was pre-installed on the new computer.

I got the same problem. Hardy installed perfectly, I havn't tested
Intrepid, but Jaunty Alpha 5 and Beta 1 fail with the same error as

I can confirm this problem. I experienced the same symptoms, or rather

The problem with the mushy and indistinct icons is not in their quality,
which is superb by the way, but in the fact that, for the default panel
size, SVG icons are used instead of the 22x22 or 16x16 PNG variants.
