I went back to Ubuntu 9.04, then I unpluged my laptop. I have not had
any power problems! (It was nice to go back to 9.04!) Windows XP also
works fine.
Before going back to Ubuntu 9.04, I tried the following, all failed:

IA friend had a problem like that. In that case, it turned out to be the
firmware in the voltage sensing device. A firmware upgrade fixed it. But
if your battery is old, then it may be the battery, as you say...

I insert a DVD in to my second DVD ROM and I no longer see a mount icon
