This issue affects me as well.
I am not sure how the information I have could change the priority, or
even if the two are related, though I suspect.
I configured my guest XP on virtualbox to share the internet connection it has
with a wnda3100 v2 usb adapter.

Public bug reported:
I have the same problem on 10.10 The Sound icon shows volume, and the
card is present in the hardware tab, there is just no sound.
Currently I am on 10.04 and the card is a pcie Sound Blaster X-Fi xtreme

Both versions are 64 bit, and I would eventually like to use S
I have installed 10.04 on the system I could not get sound with 10.10
and there is still no sound.
right now, that means that blacklisting intel_ips is a valid workaround
for other systems, and that the pci sound is questionable in both 10.04

sound card(s) not detected in Ubuntu 1
I have added intel_ips as the line : blacklist intel_ips

I was actually surprised when the wireless usb adapter began to work. I
was running 9.1, and after a first (fatal) install of 10.04 I am running
ubuntu again. The currently trouble with the wireless devices seems to
be purely related to WPA and WPA2. I was already broadcasting AES only,
