I have been having a very similar issue with Ubuntu 12.10 and Gnome
Shell. I am not entirely sure but I think that I have now fixed it by
replacing my video card. The old one was an ATI X1300 with 128 megs and
the new one is an ATI HD4650 with 512 megs. I suspect that the old card
was only marginal
My issue is that my system and/or Telepathy will log me into Facebook
and Gtalk automatically, but not the AIM network.
In order to use AIM in Empathy I have to go to the Edit > Accounts
screen to fix the problem. Once there if I disable my AIM account and
then enable it again, it will log me in.

Fresh install of Natty 11.04 Beta 2 and setting up Rhythmbox for the
first time. I had finished setting up my prefs (turning off all of the
plug-ins) and was attempting to exit the program. The interface did not
respond and then the program exited.

Thank you for the super-fast reply. I updated from 9.04 to 9.10 via the
"update-mananger -d" option and the problem went away. I manually
removed my Treo in gnome-pilot and recreated it. The error message did
