Ah my mistake, I forgot all about this , problem (for me) was cured when
various other kernel related updates were released. So the cure to stop
anything like this happening again, would be to release any updates
related to the kernel at the same time!!!

Ubuntu 8.04
upgrade kernel to 2.6.24-19-generic, rebooted, got "computer running in low
graphics mode" wizard, reconfigured to Nvidia 8 graphic card and 1600x1200. no
matter what I do Xserver will only start X at 800x600.
finally rebooted using previous kernel 2.6.24-18-ge
