I got the same problem on my old IBM Thinkpad R40. After upgrading from
9.04 to 9.10, the screen freeze at either after login or while opening
the first window in desktop. I did a clean install and still had the
same problem.
I managed to solve the problem by : booting into root shell; xinit; gdm;
