After the upgrade to saucy the function json_encode is missing from the
current version of php5.
It should be always there on PHP versions >= 5.2.0 (not a pecl module
anymore) [1]

Same problem here. But it didn't start with a manual reconfiguring of
xserver-xorg but with some updates yesterday (or the day before
yesterday).
Please fix this.

Binary package hint: x11-common
IMHO this "feature" should be moved into a distinct package as it is
dependent on gdm while not beeing an essential part of x11-common.
If a user (like me) tries to remove gdm he will get stuck with this
"fail safe X server" - no chance to rem
