If you don't need to convert writer or calc to latex, then you can
simply uninstall package openoffice.org-writer2latex and the error will
disappear. You will get a warning, that the package openoffice.org will
be uninstalled. But don't mind. It's only a metapackage where
writer2latex belongs to. T

I can confirm this behavior for many Icon-themes. Especially those with
only one scalable-folder. Only these ones with the whole icon-set in all
possible sizes as png-files are working properly. Seems that Hardy or
gnome 2.22 isn't looking for all the icon-locations as the older
versions

No I don't. The VT's seem to be dead. Only the setupcon-command will
solve the matter. But because of the different situation on single-user
mode, I can't even log in blindly to execute setupcon. (normally in
single-user mode you are still loggged in as root, when my memories are
right) Did you
If the problem doesn't depend on gdm maybe its related to this one.

OK, this workaround does it also for me.
Seems to be really only a problem of the colors. Text and background colors are
the same.
