We updated last night (4.15.0-60) and started having issues this
morning... issue has been fixed with update to 5.0.0.27 HWE. We’re up
and running again, but trying to figure out where the issue stems from.
Is the issue caused from a bug or an attack?

What method are you using to install the Java jdk? I don't use the jdk
but I did not have any issues with Java RE 1.6 until a security issue
was discovered with that version, then subsequent upgraded versions of
Firefox automatically disabled jre1.6. But once I've installed jre1.7
from java.com,
I am using integrated SD card readers in both the original pc that I
posted from and the newer laptop. Both readers are obviously separate
and perhaps made from different manufacturers. I tested with the newer
laptop to see if there was a physical issue with the 8GB MicroSD.
