Installed compiz-fusion-icon, and add to startup applications "fusion-
icon". Just in case I also added "compiz --replace" to startup.
So far all is good, I can run gnome with compiz and no freezes at all

I added this command to the startup application list: "compiz --replace"
in order to reload compiz as the windows manager upon startup. I then
enabled the visual effects, and so far it looks like the problem is
solved.

As I mentioned before, this bug seems to be related to compiz and
therefore does not effect kubuntu at all.
Kubuntu also has desktop effect which work with the current graphic card
driver, and no downgrade is required.
I see no reason to have to downgarde just because I prefer gnome to KDE.

I agree, that's not the solution. I was hopping that that piece of info will
shade some light.
By the way,I searched the web and didn't see many reports about this bug.

I have the same problem.
I logged in to "fail-safe gnome" and download the kde-desktop, to see if it is
effected as well.
I restarted and logged in to kubuntu and everything is great.
Can the fact the kubuntu is not effected connect this problem to compiz?
