I just installed Ubuntu 8.10 on a machine that was experiencing this problem with prior releases of Ubuntu. Without adding any lines to the blacklist file, there are no errors in the Xorg log file for me. The visual effects appear to be working properly. I'm using a Radeon 9800 Pro (Radeon R350)

After reading bug #163713, I realized that after having installed gnumeric and gnumeric-plugins-extra, I needed to activate the plug-ins with the given functions in it. Tools -> Plug-ins. Then check the Active box next to the "Financial" plug-in. I also noticed that the Help->About doesn't work
