I have this problem, too, on a Microcenter PowerSpec Intel based system.
The builtin card was a problem in the past because Googleearth would not
render properly when effects were used. I had to use "none" for visual
effects.
Now my system locks in 9.10 when choosing Gnome. Failsafe Gnome works
Here is the log file from the session with no xorg.conf

I did not pay enough attention - just let it bomb then reran update
manager successfully. It did not then compain. Things seem fine now.
