I have come to the conclusion that the problem is with the usb ports on my
computer.
(the scanner displays the same problems in windows on the same computer, and
works perfectly when connected to my laptop)

another thing I just noticed.
If I set the scan type to binary, I can use any dpi (including 1200) and
it works perfectly
if I set the scan type to grey or colour, then it works perfectly if I
use 100 dpi, but anything higher causes the problems.

Public bug reported:
hello
I own an Epson Stylus cx 5900 multifunction printer/scanner/copier.
I am able to use the scanner with sane (using either xsane or
gscan2pdf), however it will stop half way through scanning and just sit
there.
I get the following dmesg output from turning on the scanne

deleting the .gnomerc and .gnomerc~ files fixed it for me :D
thankyou cbudden for letting us know of a fix...
as for your problem still remaining, see if deleting .gnomerc~ as well
fixes it ???
