I have found the reason for this issue and the fix:
Due to having an android phone, and being logged into several Google services
at one time Pidgin fails to connect.
The solution is simple in the Advanced tab of Modify account add
talk.google.com for the connect server.
Accept the ssl certificat

HP DV9000 17" model laptop has a separate number pad, when the num lock
is on, the letters that would be numbers on a regular laptop keyboard.
When the num lock is off the keys work properly EXCEPT for the numbers

Same problem here - stuck at "Fetching file 1226 of 1226" and has been
stuck there overnight. i386 edition, US English. Using the Internode
(Australia) mirror. I'll retry as mentioned by Jamie (#6).
