I can confirm this behavior on my notebook with ubuntu 9.04, and my old
stationary P3 with ubuntu 8.04.2. The problems occured in the last week(s).
Workaround:
Killing "bonobo-activation-server" seems to fix the problem temporarily.

The problem was just temporarly during install, after trixing with synaptic and
apt-get the problem disappered...
apt-get update shows no warnings/errors anymore.

I just realized that the Language support and keyboard layout has been changed
to "US" instead of Swedish!?
That's why the Login failed on 2 accounts. I changed my password from the One
that worked, and managed to login via gdm, however when i start Evolution it
only accept my old password... Hm

booting i also get "usb1-2, device not accepting address 2, error -71, assuming
drive cash.." probably not relevant but those are the only err-messages i can

Blastus! Try Start in failsafe mode from Grub, and drop to textmode, do
as above but before "startx" type "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg"
you can also try install "sudo apt-get install xserver-xgl" but not sure
on that.

Not sure if i follow you, the /root/.synaptic directory mostly contain log
files. can't Synaptic find it??
In that case you might try to reinstall Synaptic...

In those few cases i've got problems with Synaptic (7.10), i have solved it
with:
"sudo apt-get install -f" or "sudo dpkg --configure -a" from terminal.
In Ubuntu 8.04 beta the system solved all peripherals automatic.
Try to find nessesary drivers trough Synaptic if possible.
