Sorry, I forgot to add: I actually use aptitude, not update-manager, but
the problem seems to be with checking the version by the packaging
system anyway, and is apparently independent from the tool used to
install/update.

Well, maybe it does, but I'm not the one running vpnc, it is run
automatically by kvpnc - I don't know how to fix that. When I run vpnc I
always do it with admin rights (sudo vpnc ). Any
suggestions? Or should I instead run kvpnc with admin rights?

Loading of module "tun" failed!
https://bugs.
Just tried with fully up-to-date Kubuntu. It still cannot connect, what
follows is the debug output (personal data omitted):
---
debug: vpnc arguments: /usr/sbin/vpnc --script
/home//.kde/share/apps/kvpnc/vpnc-script. --debug 5
--pid-file /home//.kde/share/apps/kvpnc/vpnc-pid..pid
--natt-mode c
Same here, "sudo modprobe tun" gives no errors and fixes the 'loading of
module "tun" failed' problem; however, kvpnc now just times out. "vpnc
" works flawlessly (takes maybe half a second to connect).
My vpnc configuration file is very simple (personal data omitted):
