I already had the totem package above already installed (came thru
automatic update) but it still didn't fix it. The way I had been doing
it was to copy the downloaded youtube video from the /tmp folder to
desktop and add extension .flv. This used to work about 6 months ago but
no longer.
My fix:
To sum up for a fresh 8.04.1 install:

others installed packages java-common, sun-jave6-bin, sun-java6-jre,

I'm not computer savvy enough to know how to run things from the command
line. However, when I try to empty trash I get the following notice,
