I have not really changed my system in any big way: I have loaded up
files as per documentation for DVD playback and have installed skype and
thats about it.

I use the nVidia driver for my graphics card. If Visual Effects on the
Desktop Background are set to anything other than none it causes the
help screens to disappear. An example would be if you opened calculator
and use the menu path Help>Contents. I

Checking for third party drivers it seems that the NVIDEA driver is enabled but
