I'm having the same issue in 8.04 on my Dell XPS M1330
I'm playing through Jack, not ALSA in case that makes a difference.

I had the same problem on my Ubuntu XPS 1330
To get around it I opened up the sound preferences. In sound preferences
I opened edit->preferences from the menu bar and turned all checks on.
Then I turned everything way up. A few of the sources were initially
muted. "Digital Input Source" in the Opt

Open office sets the language default to Canadian English for my
Canadian machine. There is no Canadian spell check installed but when I
click Spell Check I get the same message as I would if I had no spelling
errors. I've sent out two majo
