I had the same problem on my Ubuntu XPS 1330 To get around it I opened up the sound preferences. In sound preferences I opened edit->preferences from the menu bar and turned all checks on. Then I turned everything way up. A few of the sources were initially muted. "Digital Input Source" in the Options menu chooses between the two mics. I'm getting feedback from the built-in mic but I'm sure the volume settings just need tweaking (something I'm not particularly interested in right now)
