Got a new laptop from Amazon, wiped the nasty windows that came with it
and put linux on there and started experiencing this issue almost right

I am running ubuntu 64bit 14.04 and my mumble-server is behaving the
same way as the OP described. My only work around has been to not
modify the ini configuration file (leave everything with the default
settings). I've tested this with many reboots and as long as I don't
modify the /etc/mumble-s
Same problem with Intel NUC D54250WYK. I've only ever run 14.04 on it.

I think I finally have some success. After I did the BIOS update, I
forgot to load optimized defaults. Once I did that, I've been able to
boot twice in a row with all four cores. BIOS updates are no joke, I
shouldn't have neglected them for so long.

connection issues. I've done some more tinkering, and setting maxcpus=3
has allowed two successive boots to boot normally, with three cores.

Took me longer than it should have to determine the correct method of
compiling a kernel for Ubuntu. I found this howto

Still nothing. It's as if Ubuntu just flat out refuses to boot the
fourth core. I booted into Windows XP 32bit, just to make sure it could
boot all four, and both Taskmanager and mprime showed four cores. I let
mprime run for about five to ten minutes, to make sure each core got
warmed up, then
I upgraded the BIOS to the latest offered by Shuttle. I thought this
might have fixed it, because some Phenom II micro code was added. I've
only tried one boot, and it didn't work. I'll do some more testing in a

I want people, and especially the dev team, to know how serious this
problem is. it killed my SSDs, as I reported in an duplicate bug of
"unknown" importance. I mean this is hardware issue. Nothing could get
either of my chips working get - not zeroing out, not a gparted live
USB, not Windows / Par
My EEE is bricked right now because of this problem. Dead. I got Jaunty
re-installed but everything f*cked up again when I updated to Karmic.
Now Jaunty can't work with either SSD because of I/O errors. This is an
extremely CRITICAL problem. Any Linux novice would be pretty convinced
their hardware
A lot of people are saying this is fixed, but I'm still experiencing it
on three machines. Two of them are 64-bit upgraded from Jaunty. One is
a 32-bit clean install. I've run all updates. I've stopped and started
the applet. I've rebooted. Still, I have the same issue.
