The problem persists in 14.04. The solution in comment #96 still does
not resolve the issue for me.
I can confirm Rahul's observation in #116. Adjusting the brightness
before the kernel loads works. Adjusting after that freezes the system.

I noticed the bios-outdated tag, so I've updated the BIOS on my laptop
to the latest one offered by Lenovo, which is 2.57. I re-tested with
2014-Mar-13 and experienced the exact same results.
The daily builds for the 16th and 17th won't boot on my laptop.

I confirm the bug still exists on Ubuntu 9.10 Screem version 0.16.1.

Like forumboy, I got this error using Software Center in 9.10 32 bit. I
had just upgraded from 9.04 a couple of days ago.
1 - Open the Ubuntu Software Center
