Let me add one additional piece of information : the terminal windows
(gnome-terminal and konsole) are all white when compiz is enabled in 16
bpp. I have to enter commands through alt-F2.
Upon looking at the compiz log, I see four problems :
- Warn: No GLXFBConfig for depth 32

fine with compiz in ubuntu hardy, provided two specific options in xorg.conf :
